In 1347, ships drifting into the port of Messina carried more than just goods—they brought death. Sailors were found either dead or dying, their bodies covered in strange black swellings. Within days, the sickness spread through the city like wildfire.

This was the beginning of the Black Death, one of the deadliest pandemics in human history. It would go on to wipe out nearly one-third of Europe’s population over the next few years.

People didn’t understand germs or bacteria yet. Some believed it was punishment from God, others blamed poisoned air or even outsiders. In fear, communities turned on each other. Entire villages were abandoned. Mass graves became common.

The disease traveled along trade routes, moving from Asia into Europe, carried by fleas living on rats aboard merchant ships. Once it arrived, there was no stopping it.

Yet out of this devastation came change. Labor became more valuable due to the massive population loss, weakening the rigid feudal system. In some ways, the tragedy helped reshape European society, paving the way for major economic and cultural shifts.
